Book Design

Prompt: Explain how you developed your design for your book carving. How important was it to have a clear plan before starting? What were the challenges you faced when working on this project? Explain how you overcame them. Discuss your design and how it relates to the book you chose (if that was the case, if not just discuss design). Did you take any risks? How and why? Describe how you felt about the overall project and if you felt it was successful.

When developing the design for my book carving I wanted to make it ironic for the book I used was a law book and the design was a person dying from a lightbulb. When I was on pinterest looking up ideas for the project I saw a photo of a person with a phobia for lightbulbs and thought that was interesting and decided to incorporate it into the design along with the person dying. It was very important to have a clear plan so that I knew where to carve and at what time it comes in. This project was actually quite difficult for me, my pages were not like a regular book and were very thin and do to that they ripped quite easily. I overcame them by having to go page by page, one at a time. The portion of the design with death relates to the book I choose by the book being a law book and I found it to be humorous to have a design with an ironic twist. I took a few risks by having to carve out a person and by doing lots of curved lines for they were to me very difficult to cut out. I feel like this project was pretty successful but I do wish I had made by design deeper.

Mixed Media

1. How did you show amusement and variety in your piece? Explain your choice of subject matter and how you created a unified piece of art.

I showed amusement in my piece by making wacky combinations of hybrids.  The point is to laugh and be like that is so weird! It has variety by using all sort of different media material and by having animal parts attached to human parts.  I choice this subject because I wanted to do something different and something you can laugh at the created combinations.

2. Describe your experience with using mixed media. What mixed media did you use for your piece?

This was my first time doing a mixed media project and it was actually kind of hard to grasp the idea of how to create a piece of art with it. I used tissue paper, newspaper, magazines and paint  to create my mixed media project.

3. What role did our lessons on visual journaling play in the success of your piece? Explain.

Our visual journaling  lesson help me in the success of my piece by showing me different combinations I can do to create a project along with how to combine it all together to make a uniform piece.

4. Discuss any challenges you experienced and how you overcame obstacles.

I faced the challenge of how to make it more like a collage but still able to tie in all the pieces to make it look like one piece of art and not multiple.
